The New South Wales south coast is considerably underrated when it comes to coastal getaways. Great beaches, extraordinary national parks and lots of wildlife, this makes for the perfect way to escape the city lifestyle. With so many towns dotted along the coastline it’s often hard to choose where to spend your time so here are some of my favourite spots to stop.
Also known as the gateway to the South Coast located just south of Sydney, Wollongong is the perfect place to start your road trip. If you are traveling to Wollongong from Sydney you absolutely must go via the Grand Pacific Drive, a spectacular route following the coastline through the Royal National Park.
Being the third largest city in NSW you would think that it’s full of hustle and bustle, but it’s actually quite the opposite. It gives off a lovely relaxed beach town vibe, however still having easy access to everything you need.
Some things that should be on your to do list here is a tour of Nan Tien Temple, the Wollongong Art Gallery and a stroll around the Wollongong and Harbour Lighthouse.
Kiama is located just over half an hour south of Wollongong. It’s here in Kiama where you want to sit back, relax and enjoy the rugged coastline for as long as you can.
Home of the world famous Kiama Blowhole, an amazing natural spectacle and if you’re lucky you might see it in action, spouting seawater up to 20 meters upwards – a must see for all visitors to Kiama. After that enjoy some time lounging along the beaches, which often feel uninhabited and have lunch along the Main Street.
Continuing about an hour south is the gorgeous Jervis Bay. The area is beautifully located surrounded by white sandy beaches and outstanding national parks.
Take a trip to Booderee National Park, an area of natural beauty where you can get involved in many different activities such as surfing, whale watching and the option to learn about the Koori culture through Booderee’s Aboriginal interpretive program. It’s here you’ll also find some incredible walking tracks and the perfect swimming spot!
Journey just another two hours south to the beloved Batemans Bay for an unforgettable coastal escape. This charming seaside town has so much to offer with extraordinary game fishing, fabulous beaches and the famous Clyde River oysters.
You can choose to explore the area anyway you like, by bike, car, on foot or perhaps hire a kayak and adventure out to all the little inlets Batemans Bay has to offer.
Just short of 5 hours south of Sydney sits the laid back coastal town of Narooma. If a road trip isn’t what you were after than you can also fly into Moruya Airport, hire a car and make your way into town.
If you are after a wildlife filled adventure than you have come to the right place. Make your way to Montague Island where you can swim, snorkel or scuba dive with a colony of fur seals. The island is also home to a couple of cute penguins and if you are lucky enough you might spot a few so make sure you pack your camera.
What’s your favourite spot along the New South Wales south coast?
